Sensory Spice Painting for Kids

This sensory spice painting art project for kids makes a great addition to a five senses theme, or simply a new way to explore sensory play! These paints come out fragrant and with a different texture, making for a unique experience.

We kicked off our 5 Senses Unit by painting with spices! I was possibly more excited than my son, since this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Natural pigments are exciting to me, even though we used white paint and colored it with the spices.

Plus, something like this isn’t really appropriate for our toddler. She’s a big eater, and the smells would definitely throw her off!

But this year, my son was finally old enough to enjoy the experience of painting with scented paints, and exploring pigments!

Simply mix white washable kids paint with various spices for colorful, scented paints!

The colors come out vibrant, and the fragrance is stronger than you would think. Even once the painting dries, you can continue smelling the spices throughout your 5 senses unit.

Some spices to use for your spice paint:

  • Cumin
  • Turmeric
  • Coriander
  • Dill Weed
  • Cinnamon
  • Paprika
  • Ginger
  • Chili Powder
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla Extract

Use various paint brushes and talk about the smell coming from each spice/paint. Allow for free art exploration, and hang it up somewhere where your child can continue smelling it for a few days.
