DIY Apple Pie Moon Sand Sensory Bin
Make your own DIY Moon Sand using 2 ingredients you probably have at home already! Add in a few utensils and toys and a little imagination, and your child will stay engaged in pretend play for a while. It lasts a long time as well, so keep a bin of moon sand in your closet to bring out for many uses!
Another big hit in my Apple unit and with my preschool members has been this apple pie moon sand bin! Who knew that flour and oil mixed together makes a homemade “moon sand” that can hold it’s form!
I personally made ours with baby oil, but a couple of the parents that have followed my unit study have said that coconut oil works just as well, which is a much better option.
Truth be told, I don’t measure my moon sand when preparing it for my son. I put some flour in a bin and squirt some oil and mix until it’s the consistency that I like. Not too wet, not too dry. It comes out like a perfectly crumbly mix that will hold its shape when you build things.
Other websites have quoted that it’s about a 9:1 ratio of flour to oil.
There’s your DIY moon sand!
From there, add whatever scent you have on hand. My unit studies do require you to purchase some items when necessary, but I strongly encourage families to use what they have at home already, while slowly stocking up on their homeschool materials.
At the time of this craft, I didn’t have any pumpkin pie spice in the pantry, so I used cinnamon and nutmeg. Whatever will smell similar to an apple pie is great. And hey! If you don’t have anything, that’s okay too! Once you talk about making apple pies with your child, they’ll start “baking” either way!

- cut up pipe cleaners
- little bowls
- utensils
